I know this is kinda a no-no in forums, but since its a new forum, i did not see this thread..... This is a copy of what I posted in the old-timer thread..
I have a laptop, with a Verizon Wireless cell-phone that doubles as a wireless modem, NOT wi-fi... Wi-Fi coverage is spotty, and if you find a hot spot, its bound to have WEP turned on. Remember Wi-Fi will only reach about 150 ft from a house or Starbuck's cafe, neither of which you will find in the woods!
A PCS data-ready phone comes in handy, and on the w/e its all free air-time. I was not aware of this, and its not really publicized either. I found out by looking for cables for my phone, and saw a forum much like this one talking about this subject. The laptop and phone I was carrying with me on my hunts for a week or so, got old real quick. From the help of a fellow cacher, Mark Gessner, I am now using my Palm PDA, to download all the same info that is on the web site to the PDA, and I keep a copy of that exact same format on EasyGPS as my own database. The software for the Palm is CacheMate, you might have seen an email about in the yahoo group. I am really hooked on the ease of this, and much lighter too. My Palm has a built in camera (very low pixels, kinda the quality of a web-cam) but its color pics look decent up close. I dont have the experience of years, or even a month, BUT those electronic gadgets sure come in handy, and info is the key to some of the well hidden caches. If anyone would like, or has trouble setting up one of these technologies, I would love to help, as I got help from Mark very quickly, I would like to return the favor!
